Kuiu Gear
 

Just wanting some opinions on the Kuiu Gear. I'm heading up north for Caribou hunt in August. Just wanted some thoughts on the Kuiu Gear. I have read that lots of guys suggest the Yukon pant and Jacket and pack a "puffy" jacket for if weather turns cold or for when you stop to glass. It will be coastal conditions so fairly moist, sounds like it is good chances of light drizzle most days.

Any suggestions for gear that I haven't thought about? I have boots and full on rain gear figured out, just not sure about the rest...

I am really impressed with there gear. I find some of the coats too fit small if u have larger hands or forearms, so I would suggest trying too try some on before ordering. Get ahold of the Canadian rep and explain what u want he will find u a way too get fitted I'm sure. Good luck on the hunt

Its really nice stuff but its not perfect. I have an alpha sv jacket and my dads yukon is almost as nice. Definitely go see Dallas and try everything on before you order its totally worth it.

Also agree with going to see Dallas and trying stuff on. I ended up going up a size in my jacket from what I would have ordered if I didn't go see him. Definitely well worth it. I really like my gear that I have from them. If I was to go for a full system it would be:

Top:
icebreak coolite 130 short sleeve
Kuiu Merino 210 hoodie
Kuiu peleton 240 or sitka core heavy weight
Kuiu Super down pro or ultra depending on how easily you get cold
Kuiu Chugach or yukon pro jacket.

Bottom:
Kuiu merino 145 zip off bottom
Kuiu attack or yukon pant (If i picked attack i'd get the chugach rain pant as well)
yukon gaiters

Accessories:
Kuiu merino hat
Kuiu merino gloves
Peleton 240 beanie
kuiu attack gloves
Super down glassing mittens.

That is pretty much my whole system minus the gaiters and the puffy, which if I had the money id own both as well. I sometimes run the guide vest as well when on the move over my merino base layer as a windblock. Keeps my temperature regulated, but I'm not chilled from the wind. If you are going to be seeing a ton of rain id pick the yukon jacket and pant for sure. Hope this helps.

I have a super down puffy and like it quite a bit, but I also have a First lite Uncompaghre puffy and really like it. Can't go wrong with Chugach or Yukon. The Yukon gaiters are excellent except the won't fit over bigger boots.

Agree with previous posts...
- everything I have of Kuiu is great, including the 1850 pack.
- visiting Dallas (Red Deer) to try stuff on and seek expertise is very valuable.
- most items have an athletic fit, which is great for me but not for others.
- it's designed for mountain hunting, not sitting in tree stands (or trucks)

You mean I don't look cool driving lease roads in my pick up lifted 43" wearing my Kuiu gear and white Oakley's?? :bad_boys_20:

Just take off the white oakleys, then you’re all good man. Haha.

I wear the guide series gear, would say it's the best early season gear. I'd go with the Yukon or chugach line, layered with merino wool for base layers

I find the guide series too warm for Sep. It's great for these current temps around 0 and below for me.

How was the hunt
 

Hey just thought I would ask how was the hunt and how did the gear end up performing? what gear did you decide to go with?

I have a like new XXL Guide Jacket for sale.

I'm heading up in August 2018. Still trying to get geared up.

Fits like a normal L/XL

I would actually recommend the guide jacket with the proper layering underneath. That jacket is warmer than you would think plus you want clothing you can use for that hunt plus local hunting as well. Just make sure you layer.

Did you need to pull a loan to pay the duty?

Not when you have relatives that live in the states

Dang even with CAD prices is the duty still high? I thought it was all Made in‘Mercia?!

Not made in America. Now Kuiu has a Canadian website that includes the prices of duty/exchange so you can see the cost right in CAD.

I had to pay $58 duty and $9.99 handling fee on a $219 jacket.
Kuiu has seen the last of my $$ unless something changes.

I hear yah this whole US shipping and duties bs is redonkulus.
I came to a conclusion that my UA Realtree gear works just fine. A guy I used to know told me about Kuiu a while back. A friend of his started the company. He’s Canadian but everything was shipped out of the states or in USD for some reason. Never understood. Nice stuff, you basically pay the same I guess if you were to buy Badlands or Sitka(on my radar).
So is it worth the extra premium (duty)??

Yes, the duties and shipping suck - I’m lucky to have friends in the U.S to ship stuff to. I probably saved $200 on a $600 order this past summer. Definitely do that if you can.

Buy once, cry once as the saying goes. Nothing I’ve owned has for better or performed better. I’m sure Sitka & First Lite is the same.
