What is the best cheep steak for the man on a Budget
With the Alberta Economy sucking and the need to eat steak in these desperate times, what's the best bang for your buck steak?
|
Round steak
Better still if you have a clay baker (not a slow cooker) and slow roast for 3-4 hours at 225 F with a bit of water in bottom. Carrots and potatoes cooked slow all afternoon and meat you can cut with a fork and veggies are done effortlessly. My lazy man steak meal.

I know it's not Rocky mountian big horn.. The few I've got were somewhere around the $600 dollars a pound.. lol..

1st: Beef Tenderloin (buy it whole and cut steaks out of it and then freeze) 2nd:Beef Striploin. Again, buy a whole one and cut your own. 3rd: Beef Ribeye Cut in 1/2 get 2 meals out of one I would give Duchess meats a call in Duchess AB. The CLEANEST I have ever been into in terms of processing. Both the floor and the cutting area. John is a heck of a good guy, Call him up and order 2 complete striploins (should be good for 18-25 steaks @ 1.25" ea) and save a bundle of cash.) Let others pay the extra 3 bucks a lb to the grocery stores for the individual cut an wrapped steaks. Just my .02 |
baseball cuts from SAFEWAY

Low, slow and moist sirloins are edible.

Tube?

Flank steak is suppose to be cheap. Just google how to cook it. Not bad.
|
IMO, the absolute best steak on a budget, is a pork chop.
|
Costco strip loin
Package of 3 or 4 breaks down to a few bucks a steak. There is none better for the bbq.
|
Any cheap steak, cover it in an 1/8" of coarse or sea salt. If it's 1" thick, let it sit for an hour, 1/2" thick 1/2 hour and so on. Wash the salt off, prepare steak like you normally would and cook. You won't believe how tender it is. Poor mans tenderloin.

This is about the worst time in a long time to get a taste for Beef.
Low Cad dollar and lower fuel prices should increase exports in a already tight supply increasing the price of our beef. Will send PM for what cut and where to buy cheapest beef in Alberta. Will include secret chef tip for making steaks taste like highest quality steak.:thinking-006: |

No such thing as a "cheap" good steak. Pick bottles in the ditches and go buy a T-bone. One thing I will not compromise on.
|
Top sirloin from Costco- some of the best cuts I've seen from an average grocery store.
Top sirloin is one of the more flavorful cuts, but about mid range in price. Just gotta be thick, and grilled medium rare! |
Definitely Not a Mr. Mike steak.

I like Costco sirloins, but I also like blade or chuck.

Understand question.
All meat good. If it’s good. Fire good. |

My thoughts exactly. My steak is like a car's fuel. Doesn't matter how expensive a litre it gets...I'll still buy it. My steak of choice is rib-eye. I pay $49/kg for it. And I always get about a 20-24 ouncer. Costs me around $30 for one steak. And I love every penny of it. Blue rare, olive oil, cracked pepper.....MMmmmmm |

Only a idiot would buy from there. Some people need to pay a lot to feel special. You should see what they do now to replace that wholesome needle tenderness:( |
I'll cut cost on vegies, bread, milk etc. But not Meat. Being a Meatatarian I will spend whatever it takes to put Big Chunks Of Grilled Dead Animal on my plate.
My truck has a 'speed dial' to Bon Ton's Meats in Crowfoot NW. Having said that, I've made allot of meals from offal this winter, and sheep neck soup is awesome with root vegies. |
Sirloin tip. Often on sale at sobeys and can be juicey and tender as a striploin. its about the cook, any hunk of meat can be tender and juicy if cooked right. Marinated and rare help alot.
|
+1 on flank steak, its what we got growing up as there was no affording a bunch of these fancy cuts for the odd steak dinner. Just gotta marinate it properly and don't dare overcook!!
|
marinade
the flank steak or any super lean cut.
1/3 cup of dark soy 1/3 cup oil 1/3 cup red wine vinegar I use this on duck breasts as well for 4 hours then BBQ medium rare, best duck you will ever eat.. FS |
Baloney.

I don't care what cut it is personally, just love meat. Don't care if it's cooked to shoe leather status or medium rare, i'll eat it. GF bought some big cheap blade steaks one day, didn't read the label and thought it was a roast. Low and slow in the oven all day with aromatic veggies made the best beef dips i've ever had. |
