'Kids Can Catch' with flies
The Alberta Conservation Association (ACA) would like to increase the opportunity for kids to use flies as another alternative to worms and power bait at its ‘Kids Can Catch’ events throughout the province. We offered to help them out and some of us are sorting through our fly boxes or tying a few extra to donate flies that would work well in a lake under a bobber using a spinning rod. We’re aiming for 500 but would like to make the number much higher to help ACA keep this going for a few years. We're hoping some AO members might be interested in helping out. Suggested patterns include small woolly buggers, chironomids, scuds, leeches, caddis pupae, dragonfly or damselfly nymphs. Anything that would look edible to a 12" or so rainbow or brown.
We’ll also put together a ‘kid-friendly’ handout about fishing with flies and what the flies imitate, for ACA to print off and hand out. Maybe it will help increase knowledge of, and hopefully interest in, fishing with flies and what lives under the water that trout like to eat. If you’d like to help out by donating a few flies you can send them to: Northern Lights Fly Fishers, 1112 116A Street NW, Edmonton, AB T6J 6Y7 |
Peter,
Will have to dust off the tying desk. Is there a deadline or date you're aiming for? Stan |
Planning to sort them into categories and deliver to ACA the second week of April. So if you tie 4 a day till then, Stan, I can put you down for 350 and a free copy of our "Kids Can Tie" brochure!

Peter; Great incentive,to get more fly fishers interested.I would guess that ACA,would share with the other Kids Can Catch ponds.ie Calgary

Peter,
I'm in for a couple of dozen. That's quite a commitment from Stan.:sHa_shakeshout::sHa_shakeshout: Ian |
....and hopefully get more kids interested in fly fishing, pond life and conservation. This is not just for Edmonton area events but Kids Can Catch events throughout the province. That's why we're hoping to get as many flies as possible. ACA is stocking up on bobbers.

Thanks, folks. We've had a fantastic response - already received over 900 flies for KidsCanCatch. If you're still willing to donate a few there's two major trout food items that we'd like to provide more imitations of - scuds and bloodworms.
Mailing address still the same: Northern Lights Fly Fishers, 1112 116A Street NW, Edmonton, AB T6J 6Y7 |
awesome! i will send a couple dozen your way

Just put 2 dozen bloodworms in the mail for this great cause.
