New Hunter with First Bear (worth a look - he's big)
Just got pics from a young fella that I have had the privilege of getting to know and play a role in mentoring in his big game hunting journey.
Last night he was sitting in a stand that had been pretty dead. Bait was nearly empty. About 9:15pm, this big pig sauntered in to pick over what was left of the buffet, with stinky fryer grease being my contribution:) Being that it was the young man's first bear, he wasn't really sure what he was looking at; in fact he even waited to see if any cubs were coming out. When he felt safe that it was a good boar, he raised the rifle and the boar turned his head and looked toward him. He fired, and the 150 grain SST found its mark, breaking the neck, then violently expanding, shredding lung, heart, and offside shoulder in the process. The bear was dead before it hit the ground. Ironically, he had intended to use his bow, but opted for the rifle a when he realized he left his quiver in another truck. Methinks that was the best mistake of his life! He then waited thirty minutes, replaying the events in his mind as he watched the black mass laying still, 40 yards from the stand. Good on him for having the patience to not push an animal. He then made the journey down the tree, and up to the bear. As he got nearer, he said the head just seemed to grow and grow. What a great feeling he must have had. He then called another member of our gang to come assist him. When his pal arrived, he couldn't believe his eyes, as this was the brute they had been chasing for four years, identified by a distinctive scar patch on his hind, but only seeing him on the trail cam from time to time. They shared a moment together, and got to the job of gutting, and getting him back to the truck. This was a night they will never forget. As a footnote, this is the young hunter who Gitrdun (along with Hunter1602), volunteered to refinish and restock his worn and rusted Model 70, free of charge, without ever having met the young man, simply because they wanted to give back, and invest in the life of a new, young hunter. I just thought I'd add that for you guys who have been taking potshots at him on another thread. Here are some pics... the boys say it measured 7 1/2 feet. It was an awesome night! Marky (the fellow who shot this bear) wanted to get into bear hunting this year and kept at Gboe8 and I to take him out. He helped out with baiting earlier in the season but due to an overload of school work he wasn't able to make it out hunting that often. Last was night was his second and final sit of the season. I dropped him off at the bait a little later than planned and proceeded to the bait I was hunting. When I got a text from him saying 'bear down bear down' I got excited and called him quick. Asked him if it was big and he told me it was a decent bear and told me not to worry and continue my hunt. I got down a little early to go give him a hand. I ripped the side by side to his bait and when I was pulling up I could see Marky standing by the bait with a grin on his face. When I rounded the corner my jaw hit the floor. This 'decent' bear as Marky put it was a bear we've been chasing the past 4 years. GBoe8 and I have spent countless hours after this boy the past 4 seasons and couldn't be happier to see a new bear hunter take this bruin. Seeing that sucker by the barrel puts everything into perspective. That is a very big bear.

Definitely a qualifier for the 2016/17 Hunter of the Year Award (in the hunting regs). Congrats on a great bear.
