Raccoons

Never posted here but have a raccoon in the yard to catch. What’s the best bait to put in the live trap? Something that won’t catch cats in area if possible

I like eggs and Marshmallows.

Second the eggs but prepare for a skunk or 2 as well .

I ordered a couple of racoon traps off the net......can't catch anything else because the 'coon has to stick his paw into a piece of pipe (reaching in for the bait)

they don't even look like traps, but you won't be releasing them unharmed.

K I figured eggs. Not sure how many here but caught one in the garbage. Wondering if it has kits or a few more of them. Maybe keep the trap going for awhile and see how many?

Where you live? Just wondering if they finally getting established in urban centers. If they are they aren't going any where fast. Live in east central alberta and just the odd little family but we always said if they get into the city they would breed like flies.

Dog proof coon traps or coon cuffs will catch skunks to. I’ve caught lots of em. If your using a live trap elevate it off the ground to keep the skunks out. They don’t climb well. Marshmallows, cheap dog food, eggs, work good. I like to use the dog food with smoker drippings mixed in it. They love it.

We have alwayed used sardines. The eggs you speak of do you just put them in raw with shell on? Or break them open ?

Pretty sure eggs are put in whole. They eat bird eggs so eggs are an attractant I think

Talking moose 07-10-2018 01:18 PM

Do eggs even give off much scent to attract them if they are unbroken?

TrapperMike 07-10-2018 09:15 PM

With eggs and sardines you will also catch skunks and cats. If you do want skunks you can hard boil the eggs and the set them aside till they get stinky.

This one came from just north of Edmonton by the Sturgeon River this spring. Was raiding the cat food. Male, don't know if it's large cause it's our first one.

The hard white fat from cattle, sheep and other animals.

Red Bullets 08-05-2018 07:54 PM

A person can buy small blocks of suet at bird feed stores. It is hung up for birds. Woodpeckers, nuthatches, chickadees, jays, and starlings all like suet.

For the raccoon trap an egg trap is effective and no other animal will get caught.

Trapping racoons

Whats wrong with catching feral cats, they do a lot of damage to wildlife.

Marty S 08-07-2018 11:21 PM

There’s a small amount of bycatch with the DP traps, just no dawgs. That’s what the D stands for... Dawg. Dawg Proof trap!

Apparently the odd kitty will get caught, but if you use the plastic caps, then you shouldn’t have any non targets, and keeps the rain and mice out.

So for the OP, git yerself some pink marshmallows. For the coon producer, DP traps all the way... oh wait, snares are awesome too!
