Edmonton sturgeon?
 

What are the chances of catching a sturgeon within the city limits of Edmonton? Has any one ever done it more than once, or would it just be a fluke to do so?

There is definitely sturgeon within the edmonton city limits

Quite good if you know where to go. Right now with high water, they are throughout the river. Can catch them anywhere. When the water level drops and the river clears up they will be consitrated in deeper holes. But right now with higher water you can have a good chance catching them anywhere. No hole required.

I’ve caught sturgeon in 3 places and seen them caught in 2 other places within city limits, it’s pretty common.

So you have been out lately..... and caught some ?

Last time I was out was 9 days ago. Caught 3 that day.

I'm going to head to to the nsr in the next week or two .Gonna poke my way downstream on the south side of the river. then back upstream , when I hit Victoria Settlement. See what spots I can find. My only concern if water conditions. Hoping the river will be down from it"s run off /rain period.

I’ve drove the Victoria trail to Victoria settlement. There’s a few spots to access but not as many as I expected. Those pics are from under the wasetnau bridge.

Worms or Minnows??

I use worms.

Seems worms are the go to in the nsr, but the south sask people tend to prefer minnows.

I just find I rebait less with worms. Seems like one bite with minnows and it’s gone. (That is if it don’t go flying off with the cast...lol)

Thanks for your input. Looks as though it's going to be a wet ,high water week coming up. Likely put things off till mid July. Bummer.

I've never caught a sturgeon. Are they edible, or just a curiosity?

I'm always concerned about bottom feeders, with the pollution nowadays I always wonder if they're safe to eat.

I’ve heard that some immigrants target them to eat, although I’ve never caught any try to do so as of yet. When I fished the Fraser for whites I was told they are delicious, like a mahi mahi.

As for eating anything out of the north Saskatchewan river, although it most likely wouldn’t kill me, I wouldn’t do it so long as Safeway is open.

My buddy caught about a three footer out of the Columbia River years ago. He cleaned it and put it on ice. When he got home we deep fried it, and it was very good eating.

I catch them typically near Fort Sask. Im on a mission this coming few weeks to try and decipher where exactly and why exactly the river slows down so much east of edmonton. If I can pinpoint a specific area it SHOULD produce some monsters.
I didn't think too much about the current difference until this spring when i noticed the ice was completely free east side of edmonton and completely frozen over still on the west side. It'll be hard with all this damn rain atm but just having a goal and executing it should make the hunt that much more exciting for the ever elusive 50"er :)

Quite often the ice goes first in Edmonton and eastward is all the storm drains and water melt from the city that helps break up ice.

I’ve had sturgeon and I’d eat it again, there’s better fish though.

But its noticeably slower. Theres definitely a change in current somewhere. A 3oz weight puts me in the middle of the river no prob. Anywhere from like the henday overpass and west and you need a friggin bowling ball.

Gotta be elevation leveling out. Maybe a map showing elevation would help.
Or even the river is narrower on the west end forcing the water through faster. Google earth might show that.
