Calling Moose
Considering its the second week of September, would moose in general run from or to a call?
|
Called them in this early, you never know until you try, just got in and see lots of moose sign around my neck of the woods, no tag though, archery is draw here now or my butt would be out there on a mission..
|
Ran from me this morning but that might be more to do with the caller than the time of year.

I've called moose in the earliest was September 8. But that was up north along the wabasca river early '80's lots of moose back then. Also had them come to a call as late as mid November.
The key is don't over call. A few barks every 20-30 minutes and even less if you get a response. This time of year you might not even get a response they'll sneak in and be there before you know it. Call listen and watch. Conditions should be calm and at first light then the end of the day. BW |
X2 on BW's advice. Shot my first ever archery bull many years ago on September 10. They will be in the shade of the forest this early and you'd be better off hunting them out of a treestand in the bush.

Thanks. Hopefully the heat doesnt keep them from getting hot and h***y and running to my calls.

Moose calling
Was sitting for deer last monday, had an ill come out 250 yards away. Grunted a few times and he completely Ignored me. Didn't spook, didn't really care I was calling. Can't hurt to try, but closer to the end of the month they will be interested. Have fun!

Sorry. Thought my inbox was full.:)

I have been practicing my cow calling. I have to admit I'm not very good yet. I was wondering if anybody has used the moose calls that have reeds? Would it be worth me looking into?

I think it mostly depends on what your moose call sounds like ! |

Have you tried making a "canned" moose call? Here's one that is made from a shoelace, Pringles can and duct tape (for dampening). |
Called in a bull moose 3 days ago to 30 yards.

I wouldnt get at all worked up over calling techniques/sound....moose are undoubtedly the easiest animal to call from a technique perspective in my opinion. If you even remotely resemble what they're looking for, they will come.

Killed a young bull a couple years ago. He came in to the calls. It was sept.22. Saw a bull from my treestand last year and called to him, he ended up circling downwind and eventually was busted. That was sept.15. I won't be trying till October this year. Can't wait!

Could hear a gnarly grunt a few hundred yards from my stand last night, he went on for a couple minutes and stopped.

Watched this guy rubbing the velvet off, at 60 yds for about 10 min., I'd say he's getting ready

This morning would of been a good caller! Cold, and calm winds. The bulls are getting amped up for the cows, and the cows are getting hot and bothered.
You moose hunters should have a good time calling if the mornings and evening stay like this. Be patient and listen well. BW |
Is it true that in the earlier part of the season, it's best to stick to bull calls (grunts)?
I recall Real Langlois mentioning something like that... |
