Scope height

I am mounting a different scope on a rifle and the scopes adjustment ring is barely touching the bases. I was thinking of machining the few though off the base to keep the scope low. Is there an advantage to keeping it low or should I get some medium rings? Rem 700 with unknown bases. Weaver rings and a Leopold 3-9/40 scope.

Should of mentioned the scope is at perfect height for me when looking through it.

Height is not an issue. If it feels right, it is right.

Scope height is important when trying to figure out your bullet drop from shooting. The trig math changes based on the height of the scope. That's why you see the tables say the scope height. With the adjustable tables it's always an option.

It's not a bad thing or a good thing. If it fits you, that's what's most important. Just measure it and input the height into those calculators to get the best guess. The best is to just shoot at the various ranges to find your own drop table.

I always try to mount my scopes as low as possible, I have a few that I can't get lens caps on. As long as a person is getting a firm consistent cheek weld height is not an issue
