Kimber or Christensen Arms

Hey Guys,

I am looking at getting a new lightweight rifle, so far the 2 I am thinking of are a Kimber Mountain Ascent or a Christensen Arms Ridgeline.

Do any of you have any suggestions? or maybe theres another rifle I should be looking at as well.

thanks!

Looks like controlled round feed and blind internal magazine vs push feed with hinged floorplate. Also stock design fit. Some of these things come down to personal style and others advice might not match your style.

I haven’t owned the ascent but I’ve owned a Montana, great rifle.

First off, if you’re looking for an ultralight, the Ridgeline isn’t it. You can rule that one out. An alternative I would suggest is a Barrett Fieldcraft, and from what I’ve heard it’s an accurate rifle.

The Ridgeline is an awesome rifle, I have one right now and I’m considering another. It’s not heavy but it’s also not what I’d consider an ultralight. What it is, is an accurate rifle that’s a joy to shoot on the bench and easy enough to pack all day long on a hunt. Customer service is excellent as well.

Hunting wise, I’m not sure if you require an ultralight, if so then like I said the Ridgeline is out but definitely for Hunting anywhere outside of the tallest mountain peaks I think that either will do. On the bench there is no comparison, the Ridgeline all day long. With the carbon wrapped barrel you won’t get the barrel whip like you’ll get from the ascent, the Ridgeline will also cool way faster.

Not knocking Kimber because I think they make a fine rifle, but if it were me I’d get a Ridgeline. Ymmv.

Fierce CT Edge. Under 6lbs

Don't know about the kimber but the ca comes with sub-moa or 1/2 moa guarantee. I was looking at the mesa but the don't make it in 26 nos. Ended up with a hells canyon speed in instead

Look at the Fierce or Weatherby Ultralight I have both and both are good rifles.

Advertised as 5.8lbs naked.....add rings (4oz)and and a relatively liteweight scope (<20oz)...sling and mag full of .300WSM,mine comes in right around 7.5lbs......a few ounces less then Kurt’s Ridgeline above.^^
I could probably shave 6oz or more with different scope and rings if that was a priority for me or if I wanted to punish myself further with a 7lbs all-in magnum(I hate muzzle brakes while hunting)......but I’m not climbing any mountains any time soon. When 6-8oz becomes a deal breaker/back breaker for me I’ll retire from hunting and learn how to knit mittens.

Is there more than one CT Edge? The one I see is 6.1lbs bare?

Way to many options out there. From the two you listed the ridge line blows the ascent out of the water.

I have a LH mesa on route. Will report back when it arrives.

Me too.
Which chambering did you go with?

Robmcleod82 12-14-2018 08:39 AM

Barrett Fieldcraft

campingnut 12-14-2018 01:33 PM

id stay away from the kimber mountain ascent, I had 1 in 300wsm and even after getting it back from korth it still didn't feed shells worth Sh!T I used it as a single shot
maybe I just got a bad one but it turned me off them forever

Mine is .300WSM advertised as 5.8,I’ve never actually weighed it to verify, but I know my scope and rings are 24oz so just guessing with sling and full mag it comes in around 7.5lbs?

West O'5 12-14-2018 02:44 PM

Hmmm....I see now they’ve changed the advertised weight to 6.1 on Fierce website...it was 5.8 last year, weird?
I’ll be swapping in a new scope n rings in a cpl months,I’ll weight it then outta curiosity.

Mountainaccent 12-14-2018 09:29 PM

I love th ridgeline I prefer the saftey and action on it over the kimbers

I’ve heard they’re actual weight is closer to 6-1/2lbs, I’m curious to what they actually weigh, seems to be a bit of a mystery.

I have a mountain ascent in a 308 with Swaro scope. Corolane set it up and shoots sub MOA at 500 yards with a Barnes 168 grain ttsx. I love this gun. It’s taken many animals so far including my sons full curl ram.

The bigger calibers seem to have a larger barrel profile
My 338 lapua ct weighs 9lb 2ounces with a near mount and Swarovski x5

My Edge TI (26n) is 6 pounds 5 ounces bare. I would expect the CT to be basically the same. The short action should save a couple ounces, it might make a 300wsm just under 6 with the larger bore saving a tad too.

Kurt505 12-16-2018 05:46 PM

I’ve been really impressed with the Ridgeline and now just bought a Classic II. I came across this video on YouTube, it’s the background behind Christensen and it makes sense why they make such a great product. I think they are one of the best values on the market.

I bought a long action which they advertise at 7.1lbs, it weighed out at 6lbs 12.8oz, actually less than advertised. Came in at 7lbs 15.1oz scoped.

I ended going with the Classic in 6.5 Creedmor,

now time to think about what glass to put on it? I am open to suggestions?

Thanks!!!

Budget?

galspal 01-21-2019 01:13 PM

was thinking around 2k as a max

Kurt505 01-21-2019 01:32 PM

Ballistic reticle, turrets, or just a basic Plex reticle?

galspal 01-21-2019 02:26 PM

I am leaning towards turrets

Kurt505 01-21-2019 02:34 PM

I would say look at Zeiss b4, Swarovski Z5, Leupold VX5HD or I’ve also heard good things about SWFA and Bushnell LRTS. All between $1500-$2000.

old dog 01-21-2019 02:58 PM

I have a mountain assent in a 308 and friend has the same in a 280 ai. Light and very accurate. Taken animals at 500 + yards

Curly Bill 01-21-2019 03:03 PM

X2 on the Fierce CT Edge. Its never a bad thing IMHO getting away from the Rem 700 clones (Christensen). Fierce is basically a Sako A7 action. Absolutely love mine. Works great no mechanical issues and it looks f$&@?in AWSOME!!! Sometimes I set it up on a bi-pod on my counter and just leave there for a couple hours and smile every time I walk by. Can fit 4 rnds of 28. Nosler in the detachable mag and it’s flush with the stock.
