For that price, I am building a custom rifle.

Heck you could build that exact rifle but with a better action for less.

Ya but it wouldn't say Weatherby and give you an extra 3000 fps. extra velocity. :sHa_sarcasticlol:

Sounds like you have some experience with both the 9 and 6 lug wby action.
Which action would you go with that's in the same weight class on a sub 5# build in a cartridge with similar ballistics?
Hope it shoots under 1/2" as well

Agreed. Weatherby's are at a premium these days.

The Mark V has always been overpriced, like buying a Cadillac or Lincoln. The base Vanguard has always been a bargain.

I'd look around for a used Montana in 280AI or 7-08.

6.5 or 7 prc is where you could be looking
Shooting across a windy canyon or on a windy prairie Id want at least a 7mm
Just my opinion

I Agree ! I have 2 6.5 CMs BUT a 6.5 PRC is a bunch above the CM and I would go with my 7 PRC for a single all around choice :). Contrary to popular believe :thinking-006: 139 - 145 - 150 grers shoot good out of a 1-8 twist ( mine anyhow) if you want a Fast lighter bullet but still can go to 175-180-190 for the Heavies ! Pretty Versitile cartridge it is ! :) JMO l RJ

Sheep rifle

Boomer, Geezer, sheep hunter here.
A .270 wcf works just fine

100%

The Vanguard S2 can still be had at $900 new. Hard to beat that value

I just "upgraded" from my .280 Rem this year. Getting 2925fps from 162gr in the .280 AI. Im enjoying it.

I just bought a new tikka ctr 20” barrel in 6.5cm. Perfect rifle for packing, and 6.5 will get the job done effectively.

Were I building a dedicated deer and sheep rifle it would be a 270 WCF.

Smokinyotes 06-06-2024 05:00 PM

With a fast twist so you can shoot heavies if you like.

Been looking at the vangaurd Talon and 2 versions of the MKV Hunter
Light as hell. . Removable brake.

I am a capable shooter as much of a averege joe hunter... i can and do take shots 400 to 600 yards with confidence. I can shoot the heavy recoilers well unbraked and enjoy doing so.

With that little tidbit about myself.. these are my choices that are wrecking my brain. Cost of ammunition on specific rounds i am well aware of is a bit crazy.

6.5creedmoore
6.5 PRC
6.5-300
257 weatherby mag

This is going to be a gift to myself. Where i spend more than i normally would on something that sits in the safe until its Go Time.... and going to spend a decent chunk of coin on glass. With a dial the range system like a CDS ZL.

I have never owned any one of these rounds. The romance to be an addition to my 300 bee by getting a 257bee is high.. i under stande its Big $$$$$ and reloading these days doesnt really save u any money .

Please those with experience.. sell me these cartridges with pros and cons. 257bee was the original choice though. The 6.5 PRC just sounds good and i read somewhere is beats a 300WinMag in energy past 500 yards..impressive

Back in the mid 80's, I had a 6.5-300 Weatherby made when they were still a wildcat round.
The 6.5-300 will burn a lot of powder but it really reaches out there and knocks big animals down with lots of authority.
The longest shot made with it was on a moose at 770 yds, one shot stopped it, the second dropped it.
The 6.5 PRC has been on my radar for some time, but for now, my trusty Remington 700 300 WM will be used.
The last Blacktail I took with with the 300 was 290 yds, the exit was the size of a small apple.
For walking around here in the thick stuff on Vancouver Island, I pack a scoped Remington 700 30-06 carbine with iron sights, this is the rifle I took my record book black bear with back in 2019.
I believe I would choose the 6.5 PRC for the hunting you are thinking on, you seem to have all the big bores for any intended purpose, so the 6.5 PRC would be my pick.
