Good question....

I would suggest that on a custom knife and you never changed your hand positioning, that you could buy one. However as soon as you turn the knife up side down your finger / hand grip automatically changes.

On a personal note; all my knives have the handle stay the same on all sides.....IMHO.

I should really sell a bunch of mine. They are either never used. Or used once. I got a Bowie in Damascus with a mammoth bone handle which would be the most expensive

DirtShooter 03-16-2022 07:53 PM

Am I doing it right?

very nice . been looking at boning knives . thats the nicest one Ive seen so far

fishnguy 03-16-2022 10:44 PM

^ Haha, you too, Cat? Good looking knife (and “proper” handle :)). What kind of steel is that?

Nice looking knife, Dirt. And cpm-3v is an excellent steel choice, imho.

One of the makers I contacted in regards to a knife in magnacut said that he hasn’t gotten a chance to work with it yet, but put me down on the list because he said he was planning to try some in the future. The other one didn’t get back to me yet. I may have to broaden my “horizon”. I would order one from Big Chris because I see magnacut is all he appears to work with lately, but his prices seem to be heading “up there”, from a quick look. He is as good as they come though when it comes to heat treatment and quality. I may inquire anyway.

Funny that I only mentioned it yesterday and today they dropped a couple of his rare “fancy” knives. Very lovely and expensive Loveless stuff:

They both sold right away.

Fort Henry also dropped a pricy dozier:

My Benchmade SMS is wood, which I prefer, and is S90v. Wasn't going to turn a brand new in box incl kydex sheath down for $140.00 CA even though i dont care for or use the kydex. I like the bit of extra length at 4" too. Makes it less one dimensional imo and I prefer to work from a bit of distance. Growing up with 6" narrower blades then going to a Grohmann #1 4" might be the reason.

fishnguy 03-16-2022 11:48 PM

^ Didn’t know that, thought the wood came in s30v. That’s a heck of a deal too! So far in this thread, imho, graybeard’s and yours are the best gets for the money, lol.

I don’t care for kydex either.

From what I understand Bob builds those knives himself at the St Paul shop. The Arkansas shop has a few men working at it and Dan manages it.

I saw that pro skinner at the fort and it didn’t last long. Crazy what they charged for that one. Even if it was some old stock Westinghouse micarta it was an easy $150 more then I felt it was worth.

Why magnacut? Considering your not next to the salt what’s the attraction? Or more specifically, what type of knife and what’s it’s purpose?

If your chasing a top blade in magnacut (or any steel) hit up Phil Wilson. The larger filleting knife he’s building me now should be in that steel. If I wasn’t using it in the salt though I wouldn’t be trying magnacut. It’s probably good but I can think of several other steels I would use instead.

I really like the shape on that one.

I have orange G10 liners but have been hesitant using them. After seeing yours, I will.

Thanx for sharing....:)

Thanks,Yeah, can't wait to get it!
It's actually for my son, I already have two good one I use, a Kershaw and one made by Morris Nesdole of Baptiste lake.
The steel is AEB-L, same as the steel in the knife Morris made me.:)

Some really nice knives posted in the last day. Wow. Clint Chisan does seem to make very nice knives.

DirtShooter 03-17-2022 08:28 AM

Now that I have a nice knife, I need to learn how to sharpen with a stone. I'd be learning with my cheap knives of course. What kind of stones are people using? I know someone said DMT earlier.

I hope Coiloil37 chimes in as he is very knowledgeable about the DMT system...

Pathfinder76 03-17-2022 09:01 AM

Wicked Edge for me. Gives me a fighting chance. Lol.

Pathfinder76 03-17-2022 09:07 AM

This has been around awhile. But watching him grind a knife is crazy.

And for the Kydex hesitant, he is wearing the Crotts/Dozier horizontal sheath. It is a fantastic design.

IIRC, this is the stone that Coiloil recommended to me. Available at Lee Valley. As I read from guys who use Crotts/Dozier D2 blades for skinning, many simply stick with the 600 grit as the blade cuts best a little toothy.

Those videos of Bob Dozier in his shop is what sealed it for me. True craftsman who has chosen to make functional knives first and foremost, with pleasing aesthetics also.

BTW, Bob Dozier and our old member BobbyB are like brothers there mannerisms and appearance are so similar.

I miss that guy on the board. No one made me laugh more.
