My understanding is that supp tags in some areas are due to whitetail encroachment into regions where they traditionally haven't been, or at least were once present in low density. As a result of high whitetail numbers, predator (read: wolf) populations rise.
According to this theory, controlling whitetail numbers will limit wolves. Not saying it works, but that's a strategy that I've heard.

Ya like killing all the moose is sure working at bringing caribou back :thinking-006:

a decade of slaughter and look at all the caribou lol

not that im against whitetails being reduced to bring back mulies :)

A bit of a derail I know....

I've never been to the Willmore, and I plan on making a backpacking trip next summer to explore. This will give me a goal to get into better shape, and hopefully my lab will be 100% after his TPLO surgery last week.

Aside from searching dozens of old threads here, is there any websites or books I could look into to start figuring out a rough trip plan and what to expect? Not a sheep hunter but would love to get up into a pass or two for the views.

Appreciate any tips.

I would phone the tourist building in Grande Cache, they have maps and various info there. There are a couple books wrote on the place ( google People and Peaks ) I'd think they would ship out some stuff.

Hi - we just came out from a week in the park - we got a lot of snow... made it a bit difficult getting around for a few days. As for maps, see the attached link - I also got a great one from maptown in Calgary.

Cheers,

Thank you!

We do a lot of wildland random backcountry camping but the willmore has always been a bucket list for me.

I'm looking forward to it very much.

Take a couple cans of PAM cooking spray with you to spray your horse's soles with. It's supposed to keep the snow balls away.

Are you going with a wagon or pack string?

Huntski 10-01-2017 01:38 PM

I'm hiking in
Lot of snow in there now?? Haven't been in the willmore before.
